Reese Witherspoon Pleads No Contest And Husband Guilty In DUI
In an effort to put all the public and legal drama behind them, Witherspoon pleaded no contest, while her husband agent Jim Toth pleaded guilty Thursday in Atlanta court as a result of charges brought against the Hollywood couple two weeks ago, according to TMZ.
Just to rewind, Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct on April 19 after Toth was handcuffed by police on suspicion of DUI. According to a police report obtained by Variety, the arrest was made after Toth was pulled over for irregular driving behavior.
The Oscar-winning actress was not in court, but was represented by her attorney Bruce Morris, who entered a plea to physical obstruction of another and Witherspooon was ordered to pay a $213 fine, according to the online report.
Toth, however, showed up in court and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. The good news is that he won’t serve any time behind bars, but as a condition of his 12-month probation he’s been ordered to perform 40 hours of community service and attend an alcohol education program.
Since her arrest, details have emerged about why Witherspoon was placed in jail since she was only the passenger in the vehicle. According to the police report, she played the Hollywood card after refusing to stay in her car as her husband was arrested, verbally sparring with the officer that she was a U.S. citizen and that she was allowed to stand on American ground.
In a public mea culpa Thursday on Good Morning America, Witherspoon apologized to the arresting officer for her uncharacteristic behavior.
